1950s–1960s Swiss Black Cello Straw Sculptural Hat

75,00 €

An extraordinary Swiss-made cello straw hat, sculpted in glossy black curls with unmistakable mid-century drama.

In stock

A remarkable piece of mid-century millinery, crafted in Switzerland from glossy black cello straw.
Rows of tightly curled straw are meticulously worked over an open mesh foundation, creating extraordinary texture, volume and movement around a sculptural central crown.

An internal grosgrain band and elastic help secure the hat when worn.

Dramatic yet beautifully controlled, its deep black lustre catches the light with every movement — an exceptional statement piece for the collector, or simply for someone who refuses to dress predictably.

Styling. Let the hat do the talking. Pair it with a beautifully cut black dress, restrained black heels and minimal jewellery for a monochrome look in which texture becomes the statement. Equally striking with a sharply tailored black suit, it would be magnificent for a vintage event, cocktail occasion or race-day ensemble.

And frankly, with a black dress this thing would be spectacular. The cello catches light, so an all-black outfit wouldn’t flatten it — quite the opposite.

Measurements

Internal circumference: approx. 50.5 cm / 19.9 in

Because of the unusual construction, please note: this hat is designed to sit on the head rather than fit around it like a conventional full-crown hat. An internal elastic helps secure it in position.

Condition

Good vintage condition.
With age-related wear consistent with a delicate mid-century piece. The glossy sculptural crown decoration shows some creasing, surface marks and small splits/irregularities, visible on close inspection. The intricate curled cello-straw work remains remarkably striking and retains its overall form and lustre.

The internal grosgrain band and elastic are present. Please refer closely to the photographs, which form part of the condition description.
